Northern Iwate

[Kuji] Kuji Mountain Stream
Season Late October to early November
Parking About 10 spaces at Kagamiiwa Rock in addition to several spaces alongside the national highway
Access Head to Kuji on National Highway 395 from Hachinohe IC and head towards Hiraniwa Highlands on National Highway 281 alongside the Kuji River. Traffic controls are in effect on some roads due to typhoon no. 10.

Main features The evergreen conifers like the red pine and Japanese cedar appear even more beautiful amongst the autumn colours of the konara, Japanese horse-chestnut and maple trees. This spot is by the mountain stream alongside National Highway 281 heading towards Hiraniwa Highlands.
[Ninohe] Basenkyo Gorge
Season Late October to early November
Parking There are spaces in the area surrounding Basenkyo Gorge Park.
Access About 5mins from Ichinohe IC along National Highway 4 in the direction of Ichinohe.

Main features As you approach the Basen Ohashi Bridge, you can see the vivid colors of the deciduous trees alongside the mountain stream.

Main features This was a villa of the Nanbu lords and it has a Japanese garden with a pond in the center and a splendid tea-ceremony room. The autumn leaves reflection in the pond is stunning. The autumn leaves in the garden are also lit up in the evening.

Main features It’s beloved by lots of people and known as a famous spot for the autumn leaves with species of Japanese maple and native Japanese flowering plants planted within the grounds. The leaves are lit up during best period for viewing them. ★Lighting up of the autumn leaves:Nov. 8th, 2017 to Nov. 12th, 2017 with the garden open until 20:00 (only for this period).

Parking 230 spaces at Hachimantai Chojo (mountain top) and Mikaeri Toge Pass and car spaces in a few places along the route. There are spaces exclusively for large buses also.

Main features Japanese rowan, Erman’s birch, Japanese beech and maple are the main species here. The broad-leaved trees spreading out amongst the ocean of Aomori todomatsu (type of native fir) is also beautiful.
* The best places are the mountain top and Kuroyachi Marsh. The Aspite Line is also full of beautiful colours late September.

Southern Iwate

[Hanamaki] Mt. Hayachine
Season Late September to late October
Parking Kawarabo Carpark (about 50 spaces)
Access From Hanamaki IC, cross over National Highway 4 and take National Highway 396. It takes about 75mins.

Main features There are many kinds of deciduous broad-leaved trees including beech, Erman’s birch, Katsura and Japanese horse-chestnut here.
* The autumn colors are approaching their best around the trailheads late September.

Main features You can ride the gondola from which you can leisurely look down at the autumn leaves and also enjoy the great panoramic view from the top. The autumn foliage of the prefecture road which continues along the V-shaped valley covered in native beech forest as far as Geto Hot Springs is also beautiful.

Main features The autumn foliage of the maple trees and other species alongside National Highway 107, which is named the Shiki Line, is wonderful. The autumn leaves around the Kinshuko Otaki Waterfall (Chosha Dam) area and the Makifuchi area by the Waga River are also beautiful.

Main features Although the Tsukimizaka Slope is covered in Japanese cedar, the maidenhair and maple trees of the area around the Konjikido Golden Hall, its sheltering hall and grounds are brightly colored.

Main features The best viewing spots are along National Highway 342 until the pass at the prefectural border, the area surrounding Sukawa Kogen Hot Springs and the area surrounding Showa Lake.

Main features The autumn leaves of the rock faces, including the area from Kyomeigan Rock and Ryoungan Rock to Sofugan Rock and the Daigeibigan Rock, are beautiful and you can leisurely look at them while floating on a boat.
